Speculative Storytelling Workshop

Speculative world-building gives us a tool for re-thinking and re-imagining our current global society. World building and speculation can help to make sense of the current moment and collaboratively prototype radical ideas for a possible future. In this workshop we use different tools to trigger these imaginations.  

The outcomes of this workshop will consist of a multitude of stories which can take different forms.

 
 

  • Worldbuilding is the process of constructing an imaginary world, sometimes associated with a completely fictional universe.

  • Speculative storytelling is a way to generate a fresh look on the present and future and provides tools for radical ideas and shaping innovation.

 
 
 

Miraculous Futures Deck

In the workshop, we will focus on discussing, shaping, and capturing workshop participants’ ideas for possible futures and helping them to craft their stories. Collectively and in breakout groups, participants will learn to worldbuild and construct a story with the help of specially-designed cards inspired by Tarot decks.

This Miraculous Futures card deck is designed in collaboration with Ashley Baccus-Clarke and Ludi Leiva.

 
 
 

Living Materials Deck

We create custom card decks that work in addition to the default card deck of Miraculous Futures. These custom decks are created to highlight a specific theme in the worldbuilding process and can therefore answer a specific question your organisation or company is working on.

An example is the Living Materials Deck (created in collaboration with the research centre CARADT) pictured right. This card deck is designed to make the workshop participants speculate futures and design stories with living materials at its centre, such as fungi, algae and mycelium.

 
 
 

Who is it for?

This workshop can be used by creative agencies, policy makers, research centres, art institutions, universities and companies in any work field.

Format

The workshop approximately 5 hours (sometimes shorter) and includes an inspirational presentation, an ideation session with the card deck, a worldbuilding session and a speculative storytelling session. At the end of the workshop the participants will present and discuss the outcomes.
